Para Sondra.
Carlos cannot stop thinking and thinking. He turns everything over in his mind and questions all of it. He has known from the beginning — it is written, and he knows it.
But during this future time, he will try to deny it to himself. He will internalize everything; he will rebel against the obvious, the predictable; his brain is in constant conflict with his heart. Until his heart wins the battle.
Sometimes, before beginning his dialysis session, he will choose to go to a meadow and have a dream… a dream that may grant him the knowledge he needs. Carlos will analyze, will observe the sea and the mountains and reflect on life, and he will be frightened; but it will only be a phase… an interlude, and sooner or later he will return to life. No matter how much he tries to dodge it, he will not be able to avoid it. His destiny will impose itself. It is written.
I would like to close by thanking the nurses, the nursing assistants, and the doctors Laura, Conchita, and Cesar, for helping me survive in this diffuse knowledge that has fallen to me to live here and now. Thank you…
