Letter from an Unknown Woman

Tags: criticism

Para Carmina, cariño. Te quiero.

Without a doubt, one of the most intense and passionate dramas in the history of cinema. For this occasion, Max Ophüls — director of the magnificent Madame de… and Caught — adapts, with his customary delicacy, an original work by the great writer Stefan Zweig, giving shape to this wonderful story of forgotten loves that remains, without question, the finest performance of Joan Fontaine’s career.

She is here accompanied by the French actor Louis Jourdan, who delivers the best work of his own career — sheltered, as one might expect, by the direction of the great Max Ophüls.

The film was released in 1948, set in Vienna, in a beautiful black-and-white that achieves a marvellous atmosphere through a magical use of light that makes you feel as though you were inside a dream.

The music we enjoy is by Wagner, Mozart, and Liszt. No further comment needed.

As for the screenplay — I recommend reading Stefan Zweig’s book.
